During pregnancy the body needs more of certain micronutrients. The most important are:
- Folic acid: From before pregnancy until the end of the first trimester, to help prevent neural tube defects in the baby.
- Iron: To help prevent anemia in the mother and supply oxygen to the baby.
- Calcium and vitamin D: For the mother’s bone health and the baby’s skeletal development.
- Omega-3 (DHA): For the baby’s brain and vision development.
Specialized pregnancy supplements usually contain all of these in one formula. Agree on the type and dose with your doctor.
